Sharing Your Science Through Story

In this short online course for scientists who research the impacts of climate change on human health, participants will practice skills in science communication and storytelling, and will develop and record a workable draft of a story that articulates the participant’s personal science journey and research and that can be shared orally with a lay audience.

The course runs Monday, February 27 through Tuesday, April 4, 2023, and is entirely online. Asynchronous modules will include videos, readings, and contributions to an online discussion forum. Three synchronous meetings will be held online from 5-6:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays, March 7, March 21, and April 4. The total time commitment for the course is estimated to be up to 9 hours.

This course is aimed at graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and industry professionals who research the impacts of climate change on human health. Scientists in related fields are also welcome as space permits. Course participants do not need to be affiliated with UNC-Chapel Hill.

Requirements to participate:

  • Live attendance at all synchronous online meetings (5-6:30 p.m. ET on Mar. 7, Mar. 21, Apr. 4)
  • Access to a computer with internet and webcam, and ability to record a video

This course is offered by Morehead Planetarium and Science Center at UNC-Chapel Hill and is a pilot program offered at no cost in exchange for participants’ help with evaluating its effectiveness.

The deadline to apply is February 14, 2023. We recommend applying early as applications will be considered on a rolling basis and space is limited.
