Drop by the 1st floor MakerLab at the Durham County Main Library on Saturday, April 20th anytime between 10am - 2pm to explore nanotechnology and pick up a take-home DNA-themed STEM kit! In this “tiny science” themed NCSciFest Festival event, scientists from Duke University will walk you through activities such as:

• Using both light microscopes and a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to take a closer look at everyday objects, including yourself

• Trying on outfits and gear that cleanroom engineers wear in our STEM photobooth

• Patterning paper with UV light to make UV-print paper designs and learning how this is similar to the process scientists use to make computer chips

• Learning how 3D printing can be used to make hand-held items of nanoscale structures such as DNA

You will not want to miss this! This is a drop-in event, so registration is not required. This event is free, and will have free take-home DNA STEM kits. The quantity of STEM kits will be limited, and kits will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

This event is held by Duke University’s Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMIF) in collaboration with the Durham County Library’s Maker + STEAM Team, the Precision Microbiome Engineering NSF Engineering Research Center, and NCSciFest.
