Join the Chorus to Save Frogs

Visitors to the Community Croak for Conservation Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. to noon at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher will hear loud and clear how they can and why they should protect frogs. The 2-hour event is an opportunity for anyone in the community to dive into the world of frogs, immerse in their conservation and get a splash about the Aquarium's work to preserve these amphibians. 

Environmental educators from the Aquarium will post up at three stations with a mission to challenge visitors to identify frog calls, share an encounter with a state-endangered Carolina gopher frog, and inspire conservation action through tracking the life cycle of a frog. Visitors will collect stamps on a passport at each station and take home a prize once they've completed the frog lifecycle and their passport is full.

Three Stations & Your Itinerary

1. Start your journey in the Aquarium Freshwater Conservatory where you can observe some chunky tadpoles in the Carolina Bay habitat while NCAFF environmental educators launch your journey through the lifecycle of a frog. We'll also share the importance of ephemeral or temporary ponds and keep you on track to complete your lifecycle matching game.
2. Next, in the Marine Building at our bird watching window, visitors will meet a Carolina gopher frog animal ambassador. Flanked by this frog, our environmental educators will share our frontlines Gopher frog conservation headstarting initiative, a program of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, which is literally giving frogs the leg up they need to survive from egg to froglet. You'll want to leap to action when you hear about the threat that habitat destruction poses to this species as you explore a map that shows how limited the gopher frog's range has become in North Carolina.
3. Finally, this journey will conclude outside of the gift shop, where visitors can listen to frog calls and test their Frog IQ and collect their final stamp and prize! Environmental educators will be sharing an easy 3-step process to becoming a FrogWatcher. 1. Register. 2. Take the Training. 3. Conduct Four Listening Sessions Throughout the Year. The hope is that visitors will join the chorus to save this species through the FrogWatch community science program. 

This hopping good time is included in the Aquarium experience. Advance tickets are required.
